MI Windows and Doors at Vision House Tucson Groundbreaking

On March 25, 2013, MI Windows and Doors joined Green Builder Media at the groundbreaking event for VISION House® Tucson, a sustainable demonstration home being built in the Armory Park del Sol neighborhood. The project will focus on green design, advanced technologies, and the utilization of innovative, site-specific solutions to enhance the home’s overall sustainability.

Renowned green building expert and Vision House Tucson builder, John Wesley Miller, was also at the event along with architect Hank Krzysik, Green Builder Media President Ron Jones and CEO Sara Gutterman, Congressman Ron Barber, and Mayor Jonathan Rothschild who celebrated the kick-off of this energy efficient project.

"Words have a lot of meaning and we talked about vision here today, and the very title, Vision House, says what we are trying to do," explained Congressman Barber. "The leadership that John has provided, not only in the home builder community, but in our state and in our country, has been truly remarkable. It's really not hard to understand why Green Builder Media would choose John to build this new demonstration home. Vision House is going to be doing something that we don't talk a lot about in this country, and that is, the biggest way that we can free ourselves from our reliance on fossil fuels is by increasing energy efficiency."

With an expected HERS rating of negative 17, the home is expected to produce all its own energy and will be able to sell excess energy produced back to the local utility. Vision House Tucson will be the first net-zero energy house using the City/County Net-Zero Energy Building Standard. The total cost of owning a net-zero home (including mortgage and utilities) is less than the cost of a owning a similarly priced home that only meets the minimum requirements of the building code. Net-zero homes lock in energy rates much lower than Tucson Electric Power (TEP) can provide, giving the homeowner a secure energy future, plus they help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce TEP's need to purchase peak power.

The home is being built in the historic Armory del Sol neighborhood, which has offered attractive, energy efficient homes to Tucson families for more than a decade. The colorful community, comprised of more than ninety single-family homes, embodies sustainable development, embracing elements such as proper orientation, solar power generation, walking paths and parks, and proximity to schools, theaters, restaurants and other amenities of downtown Tucson. MIWD Products Recognized Most Efficient of ENERGY STAR 2013

The Department of Energy has recognized several of MI Doors and Windows as the Most Energy Efficient of ENERGY STAR 2013.

Each year, EPA establishes criteria for specific product categories to earn the Most Efficient mark. Products that are recognized as Most Efficient must already qualify for the ENERGY STAR label.

Product categories were selected and recognition criteria were established to ensure that products that receive this recognition demonstrate efficiency performance that is truly exceptional, inspirational, or leading edge — consistent with the interests of environmentally-motivated consumers and early adopters.

Achieving Most Energy Efficient 2013 status is a challenging task. Products must be ENERGY STAR qualified consistent with applicable ENERGY STAR Partner Commitments and the requirements set forth in the latest version of the ENERGY STAR Program Requirements Eligibility Criteria for Windows Version 5.0. Product performance (U-factor and SHGC - Solar Heat Gain Coefficient)must be certified by an EPA-recognized Certification body.

Qualifications for windows differ depending on each ENERGY STAR region. Windows must meet the applicable requirements shown in the table below:

Las Vegas, NV - MI Windows and Doors' MI EnergyCore® windows were featured in BASF’s BEYOND.High Performance℠ net-zero energy home at the International Builders Show, Jan. 22-24, in Las Vegas.

Homes built to the BEYOND.High Performance program requirements are 50 percent more energy efficient than a standard code-built home and reduce indoor water use by 20 percent or more. They incorporate renewable energy and occupant behavior to reach net-zero energy use.

The MI EnergyCore® Window System is designed for optimal energy efficiency and high performance without compromising style and functionality. The system’s high performance is derived from a combination of patented AirCell™ PVC frame technology, TMAX™ Insulating Glass, and a design that incorporates numerous physical barriers against air and water infiltration. The dual-pane, insulated glass unit features Duralite® warm-edge single-seal spacers from Quanex Building Products that include BASF Oppanol® PIB as a key ingredient.

The windows selected featured the SuperCapSR™ bronze exterior color. SuperCapSR is a co-extruded acrylic layer that is thermally fused to the PVC creating a molecularly bonded color layer that becomes an integral part of the profile. SuperCap SR was derived from military infrared reflective technology, and its surface reflects 76% of infrared light to reduce solar heat and prevent heat-related frame distortion. The highly reflective properties of SuperCap SR prevent the heat build-up issues that have been historically problematic when darker colors are applied to PVC. Unlike painted vinyl, the tough acrylic color layer is highly scratch, chip, and chalk-resistant and 12 times harder than applied paints.

The net-zero energy home is a result that home builders can achieve from using the BEYOND.High Performance program offered by the Center for Building Excellence at BASF. This program provides consulting, plan reviews and other services that enable builders to construct sustainable houses affordably. This includes a wide range of metrics and features for support before, during and after the build.

The program emphasizes cost-effective techniques to reach extraordinary levels of efficiency. All homes built to the BEYOND.High Performance requirements must achieve a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index score of 50 or lower.

Innovative construction techniques include a high-performance, hybrid insulation design in the roof decking – consisting of open-cell spray foam applied on a layer of closed-cell foam. Another unique technique is the use of fluid, spray-applied flashing on the exterior for superior air and moisture barrier performance. Other features of the BEYOND.High Performance home include use of:

-insulated concrete forms,
-advanced framing techniques to reduce lumber use,
-light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, and,
-low-flow faucets

$200 Tax Credits for Energy-Efficient Windows Reinstated

Good news for homeowners who replaced their windows in 2012 or are going to do so in 2013. The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 is restoring energy efficient tax credits for windows, doors and skylights. The bill reinstates the 25c tax credits that expired at the end of 2011 and extends them through the end of 2013.

Several products from MI Windows and Doors qualify for the energy tax credits provided in the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012.

Windows must meet the 2010 ENERGY STAR ratings for both the U Factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient to qualify for this credit. These ratings vary based on the region of the country you are located in.

Please refer to What Makes It ENERGY STAR? to determine what region you are in and which windows qualify.

The 2012 Tax Credit offers 10% of the cost of the home improvement up to a maximum of $500. In order to qualify, the home improvement must be made on an existing home and principal residence. Windows can only account for $200 of the available $500. Additionally, the new bill extends business credits of up to $2,000 for builders and contractors of new and renovated energy efficient homes.

"We think it's a really great move to help consumers afford (improvements) and encourage them to think about making these energy-efficiency investment in their homes," said Ronnie Kweller, a spokesperson for the Alliance to Save Energy, a Washington energy-efficiency lobby. She noted that the law also contains incentives for appliance manufacturers to produce efficient clothes washers, dishwashers and refrigerators, and for home builders to construct energy-efficient homes. All renovations, both homeowner and business, must be completed by December 31st, 2013. The bill retroactively affects projects completed in 2012.

MI Windows and Doors Management Leads Ownership Transition Plan

MI Windows and Doors today announced a formal ownership transition plan to be led by the current management team at MIWD. The management team, along with the support of Pete DeSoto and ShoreView Industries, has successfully completed a transaction to purchase MI Windows and Doors from JT Walker Industries.

Pete DeSoto, an industry veteran of more than 50 years, will become Chairman of the newly formed entity. Matt DeSoto has been elected President and Chief Executive Officer of the business. Mike DeSoto will take on the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Stan Sullivan will take on the role of Chief Sales and Marketing Officer (CSMO).

MI Windows and Doors Donates to Homes for Our Troops in Parker, CO

MI Windows and Doors (MIWD), one of America’s leading window and door manufacturers, donated and helped to install a complete window package of new MI EnergyCore windows into a Homes for Our Troops (HFOT) home being built in Parker, Colorado. The home was built for Army Corporal Nick Orchowski and his family.

Homes for Our Troops provides homes at no cost to eligible veterans by raising donations of money, building materieals, and professional labor. The Charity Watch, one of the country’s premier charity watchdog organizations, has included Homes for Our Troops in their "Top-Rated Veterans & Military Charities" listing. Only 7 of the 40 Veterans charities rated by AIP are included in the Top-Rated Category.

Army Corporal Nick Orchowski was on his first deployment when he was left a quadriplegic after being thrown from the gunner’s hatch of a vehicle that was hit during an insurgents' attack, in Baghdad, Iraq in May 2004. Married only four days before deploying to Iraq, CPL Orchowski was the main gunner of the lead vehicle in a convoy, when they came under attack while on the main supply route leading into Baghdad. Orchowski suffered fractures of C4, C5, and C6 vertebrae and was immediately paralyzed from the neck down.

“We are grateful for the thousands of donors supporting our mission, such as MI Windows and Doors, whose generosity and support has helped enable Homes for Our Troops to build this home for Nick Orchowski and his family,” said Kenneth Preston, President, Homes for Our Troops.

Nick expressed his thanks those who are helping to provide him with a specially adapted home from Homes for Our Troops. "Thank you for your support and kindness, not only have you honored me as a veteran of combat, but you have also changed my family's lives as well. I will no longer have to adapt to the un-adapted. I have had to rely on other people to help me with most things in my new home I will be able to be more independent. Homes for Our Troops and their volunteers and donors depict the True American Spirit! Thank you," he said.

The MI EnergyCore Window System has been recognized as one of the most energy efficient windows available on the market today and was recently awarded the 2011 Product of the Year Award for energy efficiency by Builder News Magazine. What this means for Nick and his family is that they will have lower energy bills and will have stronger, more secure, and quieter windows.

MIWD offers two complete product lines that meet the required .22 U-Value program requirement. The goal of the High Performance Windows Volume Purchase Program is to expand the market for highly insulating windows by reducing market barriers and offering window products at attractive prices, thus making highly insulated windows more affordable. MI Windows and Doors Plants Nationwide Improve Performance

MI Windows and Doors, one of America’s leading window and door manufacturers, released its Shipped On Time and Complete Performance metrics for its manufacturing plants. The average for all plants in 2011 improved to 99.5% compared to 98.6% in 2010. Shipped On Time and Complete Performance is a measure of the number of orders that were shipped with all of the windows and doors that were purchased on one order.

"Our customers have told us that when they place an order for a window and door package, one of their highest expectations is that the order will ship with all of the products in that order," stated Jeff Paradise, Senior Vice President Operations, for MI Windows and Doors. "And so we've been measuring our plants on this metric to gauge how we are meeting this expectation. We are proud of the job our teams have been doing as it relates to Shipped Complete goal at all of our plants. It’s just like flying; you have to know where you are to know where you want to go!"

In order to increase the performance year over year, teams were asked to come up with ideas that would help eliminate issues that prevented the ongoing 100% goal from being attained. On January 16th, 2012, MI Windows and Doors (MIWD), one of America’s leading window and door manufacturers, donated and installed a complete window package of new MI EnergyCore windows into a Prescott Area Habitat for Humanity (PAHH) home being built in Chino Valley, Arizona. The Slider and Single Hung styles that were installed are the latest offering of the MI EnergyCore Window System and were released in October of 2011.

The frame is manufactured with a patented AirCell PVC material that is co-extruded and thermally bonded. This creates a fully insulated, corner welded frame that results in superior energy efficiency and strength. The frame is designed to support triple pane insulating glass to maximum residential sizes in any style. The line provides a complete, cost-effective family of products to meet the next phase of ENERGY STAR requirements and qualify for the Department of Energy’s High Performance Windows Program (R-5). The primary purpose of these design features are to support the weight and optimum IG (Insulated Glass) thickness of triple pane glass. These same features allow the system to be glazed with laminate or dual laminate glass without compromising thermal performance or grid options. Furthermore, the MI EnergyCore design maintains air infiltration at less than .015 cfm/ft2 (half the certification limit of .30 cfm / ft2). Air Infiltration resistance and sound control are strongly correlated.

MI EnergyCore standard TMAX glass package is offered with two laminate glass upgrade options: TMAX SQS™ (Safety, Quiet and Solar Control) and TMAX STC™. The laminate glass used in both packages incorporates a .030” thick PVB interlayer that is specifically designed to block sound transmission. TMAX SQS includes a single piece of laminate glass on the interior pane and achieves STC numbers in the mid thirties across the entire product line. TMAX STC is an 1 1/8” OA panel with laminate glass on both the interior and exterior pane. TMAX STC has been certified with STC values between 38-41 across the entire product line. These values equate to a window that is approximately 50% quieter than the typical dual pane window and makes MI EnergyCore one of the most effective and practical sound control windows on the market. Most noise reduction window solutions can only achieve this level of noise reduction with bulky and costly 4 pane systems that limit style and installation options. MI EnergyCore windows with TMAX STC laminated glass are available in all window styles including Tilt Double Hung, Casement, Awning, Picture Window, Slider, and Single Hung windows.

New How It's Made Video Released for Phase II of MI EnergyCore Launch

PRESCOTT, Arizona -- October 3, 2011 -- MI Windows and Doors released a new version of the the its MI EnergyCore iPad sales application featuring a new How It's Made: MI EnergyCore Windows video and updated technical specifications. The release was made in conjuction with the Phase II of MI EnergyCore Window Launch that is being held in Prescott at the Hassayampa Inn from October 4 - 6, 2011.

The iPad sales application was updated for release at the MI EnergyCore Phase II Launch event that brings enthusiastic dealers, vendors, and MIWD personnel together to learn about the new MI EnergyCore product line. The dealers will receive two days of intensive training on the energy efficient windows and will leave as Certified MI EnergyCore Dealers. The event will culminate with a golf tournament that will raise money for the Prescott Area Habitat for Humanity orgranization.

The How It's Made: MI EnergyCore Windows video was produced by Big Picture Video from Prescott and was shot on location at the Prescott Valley manufacturing facility of MI Windows and Doors. It shows the process of how the new energy efficient windows are made using state of the art production techniques starting with glass cutting through the packaging of the finished windows.

iPads and Custom Application Deployed to MIWD Sales Force

Prescott Valley, AZ - MI Windows and Doors announced that it has deployed Apple iPad 2.0 tablets equipped with a customized iPad application to its sales force. The tablets, along with the application, will allow the team to access sales tools such as videos, brochures, technical specifications, and sell sheets that will help them more effectively sell the new MI EnergyCore energy efficient window system.

The iPad application has the content embedded in it so no access to the internet is needed, allowing the team to access the tools even when a Wi-Fi connection is not available. Having the data local on the iPad also allows content rich media like video to load more quickly and run at a higher resolution that if it relied on a connection. When a Wi-Fi connection is available, the application senses it and allows quick access to additional content available on Facebook, Twitter, and the company's YouTube Channel.

Patrick Schutte, Business Development Consultant for MIWD designed the applicaton and then partnered with Webvanta Inc., a Sebastapol CA based technology company, to build it. Said Schutte, "Webvanta is known for its hosted database-driven CMS website solutions, and we selected them to build our new MI EnergyCore web site, which will launch very soon. The content of the iPad application will be synced from the content on our web site, and Webvanta offered a unique solution to enbable us to do that. Since the iPad application has the same look and feel of the website, it will allow for quicker adoption without any training."

MIWD Installs New Shrink Wrap Packaging System

Prescott Valley, AZ - MI Windows and Doors, one of America’s leading window and door manufacturers, installed a new state-of-the-art shrink wrap packing system in it Prescott Valley, Az, factory to protect its energy-efficient windows during the shipping process.

The unique packaging solution will ensure that MI EnergyCore Windows arrive to the job site with the same high quality that they leave the factory in Prescott Valley, Arizona.

The state-of-the-art shrink wrap packing system is made by EDL Packaging Engineers, who has been making packaging systems for over 40 years in Green Bay, WI.

The energy-efficient windows go through a multi-stage process that wraps the window panels in heavy duty polyethylene film. Once the windows are loaded into the packaging system, the window panel is controlled throughout the wrapping process to produce a tight, stable and transparent package.

A low tension feed-on-demand film delivery system consistently delivers the required film sleeve around the product. Then the edges are cut and set with a Teflon® coated constant heat seal bar that is heated to over 600 degrees. Then the window enters the shrink tunnel, where a directable air flow ensures uniform film shrinkage. After exiting the shrink tunnel, a film cooler sets the film prior to handling in order to maintain package integrity.

"The new packaging system will add incremental value to our products as they will have an additional level of protection while they ship to our customers," states Andy Mortagne, the Assistant Plant Manager, who is in charge of the process.

MIWD Using Latest Technologies to Launch New Line

With a social media campaign already started, the Western division of MI Windows & Doors is planning to launch its new MI EnergyCore window line in July with a special dealer event at its Prescott, Ariz., operations. Attendees will be presented with an iPad loaded with a custom app to emphasize MI's mobile strategy designed to help dealers sell the new line.

"Our window dealers and their customers desire a good, better, best offering," states Mike DeSoto, president of MI's Western division. "MIWD strives to be best-in-class in each of these categories. Energy Core met our test for the best. The products are designed to be significantly more energy efficient, stronger, more secure and quieter than any complete family of products on the market."

For dealers, the line provides a simple, cost-effective family of products to meet the next phase of ENERGY STAR requirements and to qualify for the Department of Energy’s High Performance Windows Program, DeSoto adds. "Most high performance solutions offered today involve complicated exceptions. For example, some styles meet the grade while other styles or configurations do not. Energy Core is designed to meet the grade in any style or any configuration. Therefore, the dealers do not need to sacrifice style or aesthetic upgrades to gain performance."

Some of the content for the MI EnergyCore app–including several videos–for the line are already available for viewing on a Facebook page developed by MI, Schutte points out. He also emphasizes that roll out behind the new product is more than the iPad app, but a complete social media and mobile strategy.

"We want to embrace and leverage social media channels and all they bring to the customer experience: ease of use, rich media, and a more casual way to communicate with our dealers and window buyers," agrees DeSoto."For example, on our Facebook page, we’ve posted pictures of our factory team in Prescott Valley. This helps our customers see the real people that make our windows and doors and how they strive to make the best windows possible with care and attention."

The company has also launched a Twitter feed and YouTube channels for the new line, he adds.

DeSoto calls the mobile strategy a key differentiator as well. "Our new content-driven web site at www.mienergycore.com [to be launched in July] will automatically detect if a mobile user is accessing it and will enable Smartphone users, iPhone and Android to start, to view the rich content on our site in a format that they can digest easily and quickly," he notes.

Window buyers will be able to take advantage of the technology also. "When a customer is at a dealer’s showroom and wants to learn more about the window they are looking at, they can use their QR code or Microsoft Tag reader on their phone to scan the affixed tag and it will bring them to the mobile web content about the product," DeSoto explains.

In addition to the selling tools incorporated into the new app and website, MI is also working on development of quoting and ordering tools for dealers to use with iPads and other mobile devices, Schutte reports. "Our vision is that you wouldn't need to fire up a laptop." By giving iPads to its dealers at the launch event, MI wants to "remove any barriers" for dealers to begin taking advantage of these new tools, he concludes.

The installation was performed by employees of MI Windows and Doors and is part of the total window package donated by the company to the deserving new homeowner. The homeowner received at total of seven HomeMaker II windows and is the first homeowner to ever receive a new MI EnergyCore French Rail Patio Door.

The MI EnergyCore French Rail Patio Door offers superior thermal performance and is built using MikronWood, a revolutionary new material that provides the beauty of wood with the weather-resistant, no-maintenance advantages of a composite. The patio door has a rich traditional design with mortise and tenon joinery, wide stiles, a tall bottom rail and designer hardware. By integrating the latest industry technology, the MI EnergyCore French Rail Patio Door has achieves superior energy efficiency, low maintenance and smooth operation.
